Haloperidol can also be used to treat uncontrolled movements and outbursts of words/sounds related to Tourette's disorder. Haloperidol is also used for severe behavior problems in hyperactive children when other treatments or medications have not worked.

This medication may rarely cause a condition known as tardive dyskinesia. In some cases, this condition may be permanent. l your doctor right away if you develop any facial/muscle twitching such as tongue thrusting, chewing movements, puffing or puckering of your mouth, or uncontrollable shaking.

Haloperidol comes with risks if you don’t take it as prescribed.

If you have a history of seizures or are taking anti-seizure drugs, your doctor may lower or stop your dose of haloperidol. Taking haloperidol may make you have a seizure more easily.

You should only use haloperidol during pregnancy if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.

Having low potassium or magnesium levels and taking haloperidol may increase your risk of cardiovascular side effects.

Haloperidol, marketed under the trade name Haldol among others, is a typical antipsychotic medication. Haloperidol is used in the treatment of schizophrenia.

It should not be used in people with Parkinson's disease. Haloperidol may result in a movement disorder known as tardive dyskinesia which may be permanent. In older people with psychosis due to dementia it results in an increased risk of death. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome and QT interval prolongation may occur. When taken during pregnancy it may result in problems in the infant.

Haloperidol is used to treat psychotic disorders (conditions that cause difficulty ling the difference between things or ideas that are real and things or ideas that are not real). Haloperidol is also used to control motor tics (uncontrollable need to repeat certain body movements) and verbal tics (uncontrollable need to repeat sounds or words) in adults and children who have Tourette's disorder (condition characterized by motor or verbal tics). Haloperidol is also used to treat severe behavioral problems such as explosive, aggressive behavior or hyperactivity in children who cannot be treated with psychotherapy or with other medications.
